We continue talking about DOS- Dangers, opportunities, and strengths.
Featuring:
Bob Nelson, Eugene real estate investment broker
Marcia Edwards, Eugene residential real estate broker
Marcia Edwards: We’ve been talking about the influences consumers have on themselves and what is influencing me externally. When you first meet with a client, Bob, there’s a process you go through that I think is very revealing as to what the opportunities and risks are to a consumer.
Bob Nelson: And that’s exactly what I’m after because if you ask me what should I do, I need to know some things about you as you perceive the world. What do you perceive for dangers and whether they’re real, whether they’re not real, it’s your perception. And frankly, that’s the only thing that you can cope with until you adjust to reality, and I’m not sure if that’s exactly my job, but I’m going to listen to your story.
Marcia Edwards: What a great conversation to have, dangers. That is what feels beyond just risky and so uncomfortable that it’s intolerable to you. Take a look at dangers. Peel the layers off, help yourself understand, do I fear death? Do I fear financial loss? What are the fears?
Bob Nelson: Exactly? And next, once I’ve identified that, and frankly, it’s not just a yes or no answer. It’s not even a one or two-sentence answer. It’s as you perceive it, and we’re going to continue to talk about it until you’ve identified it yourself because probably you haven’t sat down and defined, what do I perceive to be dangerous in my life?
Marcia Edwards: Let’s talk about opportunities. That’s more fun. That is often something that you’re helping them understand our opportunities, I’m assuming.
Bob Nelson: You understand the residential opportunities, that they’re looking to buy a new home or they’re looking to sell their home. You understand the opportunities that are there that they will not understand. Even if they surfed the net like crazy day in and day out, you will have a much deeper understanding in that sort of thing, and there’s where you can bring forth ideas of opportunities that would be available. From my standpoint, it’s income properties, same deal.
Marcia Edwards: So explore what is currently understood to be opportunities and dangers and then brainstorm what might be they do not consider just yet as an opportunity that may be available to them. We’re going to talk more about strengths. Strengths are in the most exciting to me. What do you have that’s a unique opportunity? Because you are who you are with what you have as resources.
Bob Nelson: And it’s not just money. It’s your outlook. It’s your capacity to tolerate uncertainty and to deal with tenants, that sort of thing. Those are strengths.
Marcia Edwards: More on that next program.
